There may be hope yet

Sometimes I worry about my kids’ taste in music. I’ve introduced them to all the classics – and by classics I don’t mean Tchaikovsky but rather The Beatles, Elvis, Fleetwood Mac, Motown.

But despite my attempts to steer them towards quality tunes, they have an unrelenting tendency to embrace the trashiest current music they can find.

All of them love American Idol, and Mack in particular is addicted. Every season he picks a favorite and lives or dies by his choice’s success. He is always pestering me to let him vote on Tuesday nights, or to buy the contestants’ terrible karaoke clips off iTunes.

I’m not allowed to touch the radio dial if a Ke$ha song comes on. I must admit that Aidan can belt out the chorus of “Blah, Blah, Blah” like a champ. (Luckily, he has no idea what she’s singing about, or it would go from awesome to deeply disturbing immediately.)

Reid has an endearing but peculiar obsession with the Jonas Brothers. We once rented a concert DVD of theirs from the library and he must have watched it 100 times over the course of that week. He does a great Joe Jonas impersonation, waving his arms in the air and asking, “Is ever-body havin’ a good time tonight?!”

So I worry that even I, their mother, can’t save them from making the same kinds of musical mistakes I made as a child. We had disco and they have various “singers” brought to them by Disney.

Last night we attended an art show at Reid’s preschool, followed by a dance in the church’s basement. It was very cute, watching all the little ones get down, surrounded by balloons and adoring parents. The music was just what you would predict. First there was a tune by teen singing sensation Justin Bieber. Then, a “radio edit” of something by the Black Eyed Peas. Next, as if to try and finish us off for good, the DJ spun the “Chicken Dance.”

Mack was standing next to me, watching the kids boogie and wave their elbows in the air. He turned to me and asked, “Do you think I could go request ‘A Rush of Blood to the Head’?”

Dear god, maybe this one can still be saved.
